Munchies… what causes it? Seriously? LOL

Topic is MUNCHIES ……. what in the world causes us stoners to have the munchies….. you know, like when your scoffing back cookies with ice cream, with a pizza on the way.. what is it about WEED that drives us to eat like nothing else? I hypothesize that because your in an enhanced state of awareness, foods and drinks appeal more to the senses.. so its like when you eat something when your really high, now that you got a taste, you probably want more or something else, since you’ve “broken the seal” per se… but lets look at two different arguments of what may actually be responsible for bring about the MUNCHER in all of us ….

This article makes a very STRONG case that the munchies are caused by enhanced sense of smell, and they mention peer reviewed studies have been done to confirm this.. check the following excerpt..

” Marijuana smokers’ tell-tale ingestion of large amounts of food after a bout of smoking has been at least partially explained by experiments French researchers conducted on mice, involving the animals’ olfactory (smelling) receptors, and differing states of hunger. The research was published this week in the journal Nature Neuroscience.

“The ‘munchies’ effect of marijuana depends on cannabinoid receptors. The number and the activity of these receptors can determine their effects,” said study author Giovanni Marsicano said an email interview with the Post. “Our paper suggests that the impact of marijuana on olfaction [human beings’ sense of smell] might be determinant for its effect on food intake.”

And why do marijuana smokers have the desire to eat more? Simply put, they smell things more strongly.

“Our study shows that both exogenous and endocannabinoids can disinhibit circuits of the olfactory bulb, which is the primary brain region mediating the sense of smell. Like that, the odours appear stronger to the subject.

Now lets take a look at another factor or possible factor that might actually cause munchies, this one I think I believe in more than the above article, because to me it makes more sense… Just smelling something to me is not convincing enough even with all their research bla bla bla… so lets check out this other case for the munchies..

A new study published in the American Journal of Medicine has revealed a potential benefit from the use of cannabis. The article, entitled “The Impact of Marijuana Use on Glucose, Insulin, and Insulin Resistance among U.S. Adults,” investigated the blood sugar-related effects of cannabis use among participants in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 2005 to 2010.

In several other studies of large populations, lower rates of both obesity and diabetes have been noted among users of cannabis, as compared with non-users. This curious fact encouraged the three primary authors of the study to examine cannabis use among the 4657 participants in the national survey. The researchers noted that although cannabis smokers generally consume more calories than non-users, they paradoxically live with lower body mass indexes (BMIs) and reduced rates of both obesity and diabetes. Of the participants in the national survey, 579 were currently using cannabis and 1975 had previously used cannabis.

I’ve know some pretty fat stoners, but I also known or know some pretty skinny ones too, its hard to say.. but I feel that, lower blood sugar caused or associated by cannabis use is the primary cause that induces cravings for sweets and the like.. I find it amusing that they would try and find a cure or something for obesity by studying how Cannabis induces the munchies.. obesity to me is illness of some kind. I think there is two types of it, 1 where your born and develop it, 2 your lazy and let go…  So really, the research should be focused on those that are born with and develop it, because someone who just stuffs their face with cake all day just needs to stop doing that.. Its a matter of detoxing and having a healthier diet and being active for someone who just “slides to the wayside” with their eating habits etc.. which is usually brought on by depression or something of that nature..
